Design During a Pandemic

Design is the first touchpoint of trust for many people.  Creating trust in the brand, especially in a healthcare/medical sphere, was the most important thing to me when I was at FLTR. How do you do that through design? In building our brand, we spoke a lot about creating an image of FLTR that is honest and approachable.

I did this on our website through concepting web banners with calm, inviting colors, and images of healthcare workers.

Visualizing Dense Information

In order to help educate the puplic on PPE, COVID-19, and vaccines, a big part of my role was the research and development of infographics. There was a lot of misinformation about COVID-19 during this time, so it was important to present truthful information to the public in ways that were easy to understand. I also assisted in video production and editing of product use videos for use in customer service.

Visualizing dense information also came in the form of video tutorials. I directed, recorded, and edited video tutorials like the one above to help our customers use our products.

Social Media Management

I also managed all of FLTR’s social media accounts. I scheduled posts months in advance by coordinating product launches with members of the production and sales teams. I also designed posts around PR opportunities, holidays, and important dates, like the release of the first COVID-19 vaccine. I designed every post, collaborated on copywriting with my Senior Designer, and posted everything to each social media account.

Insights

Designing for trust: Being a professional designer during a global pandemic was tough in a lot of ways. The one way I didn’t see coming was mitigating the misinformation that was so easily spread. In order to create infographics and write blog posts, I had to sift through shady articles written with no sources in order to find reputable information from scientific journals, Universities, and scientists.

What’s Next?

This experience allowed me to brush up on my research and fact-checking skills, something that I hadn’t done since high school. I’m happy I had this experience because now I am less likely to present something without facts or research backing it up.
